Mighty Mitered Scrub: A Free Scrubby Knit Pattern Introduction
Pattern Introduction
A sponge that can scrub? Yes, please! The Mighty Mitered Scrub pattern is where spongy scrub yarn meets a multi-directional knit to maximize the scrub effect. You will love to have one of these in your scrub arsenal!
Worked flat, this is a mitered square that uses garter stitch and a center decrease to create stitches and rows that go two directions. The raised center creates a ridge of scrubbing for those really tough spots.
Feel free to knit this for yourself, others, and for sale. Please give me credit when selling items made from this pattern.
Happy knitting!

Pattern Notes
- All slipped sts should be slipped knitwise.
- While knitting, it may appear that your fabric is creating a cone more than a square. Continue knitting, and when complete, stretch the fabric by pulling lengthwise, widthwise, and diagonally. After stretching, your scrubby will lay flat.
- Light blocking will remove the stiffness from your final object.
Techniques Used
Slip 1, Knit 2 Together, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (sl 1, k2tog, psso)
The (sl 1, k2tog, psso) is a two-st dec that will be worked throughout the Mighty Mitered Scrub. This dec is what will bring your line of sts into a square.
- Slip 1 st knitwise.
- Knit 2 sts together.
- Insert the LH needle into the slipped stitch and pass it over the k2tog st.
- Continue knitting.

Mighty Mitered Scrub Free Knit Scrubby Pattern Customization Introduction
You can easily make the Mighty Mitered Scrub with stripes and/or add an i-cord. Simply follow the instructions below.
You may use any customization options you choose, but remember that the amount of yarn needed will vary depending on the options you choose.
Option 1: Stripes
To add stripes to your Mighty Mitered Scrub, you will follow the instructions as written above with yarn color changes on each Row 2.
On your Final Rows, change the color on Rows 2 and 4. You may choose not to change the color a final time. The sample photo shows the Final Row 4 switching colors.
Option 2: I-cord Loop
Work Final Rows 1-2 (when you have 3 sts rem). Sl 1, k2tog. You now have 2 sts.
- Switch to DPNs for knitting an i-cord.
- Knit 2 sts.
- Slide the 2 sts you just knit to the other end of your DPN. After doing this, the working yarn will be running from the second st of the row that is about to be worked.
- Knit 2 sts, being careful to pull the working yarn tight enough that you close the gap between the last knit st and first knit st. However, be careful that you are not pulling too tightly.
Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until you have knit an i-cord of *at least 2 inches/5 cm long.
*You may choose to knit a shorter or longer i-cord to reach your desired loop size.
BO all sts.
Finally, sew the end of your i-cord to the beginning of the i-cord so that it forms a loop. Weave in your ends. Or sew ends through the interior of the i-cord. This hides the ends really well. You may view a photo tutorial on OzzyLosi Knit Designs website here.
