Moss on the Trail Free Dishcloth Knitting Pattern: Introduction 

My daughter and I decided to do a “Hiking Girl Summer”. Long walks along beautiful trails. Enjoying all that they have to offer, sunshine, plants, and of course wildlife. Living in New Mexico, it gets HOT in the sun. So we often hike to the shady bits. And we get ever so excited to see some moss growing. It’s rare here, but it does happen. 

Moss on the Trail Dishcloth features a beloved stitch pattern amongst knitters, the moss stitch! The naturally bumpy texture of the moss stitch makes for great scrubbing of dishes and other surfaces, not to mention it’s reversible!

There are many variations of moss stitch. If you find other stitch pattern variations referred to as moss stitch, do not be concerned. The variation of moss stitch used in this pattern is the double, or the Irish moss stitch.

Skills

This project is suited for knitters who are comfortable with or who are open to learning the following skills and techniques:

Cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off

Materials

Yarn recommendations

Knit Picks, Dishie Yarn Worsted, fiber content: cotton 100%; 190 yards/174 meters; 100 g, or similar yarn that knits to gauge.

13 (76, 106, 205) yards/23 (132, 184, 357) meters; 7 (40, 56, 108) g

Sample knit Size Small is shown in Bumblebee.

Knitting needles

US size 8/5 mm, or size used to match gauge – straight or circular as you prefer.

Notions

Scissors, tapestry needle.

Gauge

It is not necessary to obtain gauge to knit this pattern; however, any deviations will affect final measurements and the amount of yarn used.

18 sts x 28 rows over 4″/10 cm in Double (or Irish) Moss stitch pattern knit flat, after blocking.

Size Information

Mini (Small, Medium, Large)

Finished measurements

3 x 3 (7.5 x 7.5, 10.25 x 10.25, 12 x 15) inches

7.5 x 7.5 (19 x 19, 26 x 26, 30.5 x 38) cm.

Moss on the Trail Free Dishcloth Knitting Pattern: Instructions

Using your favorite cast-on method, CO 14 (34, 46, 54) sts. (multiples of 4 plus 2).

Double/Irish Moss Stitch

Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2*, until 2 sts remain, k2, turn
Row 2 (WS): P2, *k2, p2,* to the end,, turn
Row 3 (RS): *P2, k2* until 2 sts remain, p2, turn
Row 4 (WS): K2, *p2, k2* to the end, turn

Repeat Rows 1-4 until the piece measures 3 (7.5, 10.25, 12) inches or 7.5 (19, 26, 30.5) cm from cast-on edge, ending on an even number row.

Bind-off

Using your favorite stretchy bind-off method, BO all sts. 

Finishing

Cut a tail. Weave in ends. Block as desired.

Moss on the Trail Free Dishcloth Knitting Pattern Customization Options

If you wish to add an i-cord for hanging your dishcloth, simply follow the instructions below. 

Adding an I-cord

If you wish to add an i-cord for hanging your dishcloth, simply follow the instructions below. 

Work BO until 4 total sts remain. Knit to the end. Do not turn. Use the four remaining sts to create your i-cord:

  1. Switch to DPNs for knitting an i-cord. 
  2. Knit 4 sts. Do not turn.
  3. Slide the 4 sts you just knit to the other end of your DPN. 
  4. Knit 4 sts, being careful to pull the working yarn tight enough to close the gap between the last knit st and first knit st. However, be careful that you are not pulling too tightly.

Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have knit an i-cord *at least 3 inches/7.5 cm long. 

*You may choose to knit a shorter or longer i-cord to reach the loop size that you would like to have. 

*If you want to knit an i-cord strap for the Mini/makeup remover size, simply continue knitting until the i-cord reaches the corner diagonal from where it started. 

For the loop: Cut a tail and weave through live stitches. Pull off and close your i-cord. Sew the end of your i-cord to the beginning of the i-cord so that it forms a loop. Weave in your ends. Or sew ends through the interior of the i-cord. This hides the ends really well. You may view a photo tutorial on the OzzyLosi Knit Designs website here. 

For the strap: Pick up a stitch from the opposite corner (on the diagonal), knit 1 stitch together with the stitch you picked up. Pick up another stitch from the opposite corner, knit 1 stitch together with the stitch you picked up. Pass the first knit stitch over the second knit stitch. Continue until you have 1 stitch remaining, cut a tail and pull through the final stitch. Sew in your ends. You can sew them through the interior of the i-cord. This hides the ends really well.
