Flower Power Scrub Free Knit Pattern Notes and Techniques

Pattern Notes

  • Move the CO tail over the working yarn before you knit the center stitch. This will make closing the flower at the end easier.
  • If you did not knit a gauge swatch or are using yarn other than the recommended yarn, you may find that you need to knit additional wedges to get your scrubby to lie flat. Repeat Petal Knitting Rows until your fabric is almost a closed circle when laid flat.
  • Use a locking stitch marker to mark the right side of the fabric. This will help you when you are working your Mattress Stitch.

Techniques Used

Knit front and back (kfb)

  1. Insert your RH needle into the st on your LH needle as if to knit.
  2. Pull the yarn through the st, but do not drop the st from the LH needle.
  3. Insert your RH needle into the same st on your LH needle from right to left along the back leg of the st on the LH needle.
  4. Pull the yarn through the st and drop the st from the LH needle.

You may view a photo or video tutorial on the Tin Can Knits website here.

Wrap and turn

You may view Yarn and Chocolate’s Tutorial here.

  1. Knit the number of sts as indicated by the pattern.
  2. Bring the working yarn forward.
  3. Slip 1 st purlwise.
  4. Move yarn to the back of the work.
  5. Slip 1 st purlwise to the LH needle (do not twist the st, whichever way you slipped it, slip it back the same direction).
  6. Turn.
  7. Bring yarn to the back of your work to knit.

Continue knitting as directed.

Mattress Stitch

You may view a video tutorial from Wool and the Gang

  1. Lay out your flower with the right side facing up, and the CO edge and BO edge lined up together.
  2. Using your BO tail yarn, attach a tapestry needle.
  3. On BO edge: insert your tapestry needle in the space after the “v” on the end, moving from back to front.
  4. On CO edge: insert your tapestry needle in the space after the “v” on the end, moving from back to front.
  5. On BO edge: take your tapestry needle under the next “v” st, moving from back to front.
  6. On CO edge:  take your tapestry needle under the next “v” st, moving from back to front.

Pull your yarn tight, closing the seam after every two to three repeats. Repeat Steps 5 & 6 until you have worked all stitches and seamed your flower together. The mattress stitch will add a firm ridge to the WS of your flower scrubby; however, this can be useful for scrubbing those extra tough spots!

Cast-on

Using long-tail cast-on method, CO 2 sts, PM, CO 4 (6, 8) sts. Total of 6 (8, 10) sts.

Petal Knitting

Row 1 RS: K to M, SM, kfb, k to end of row. Total of 7 (9, 11) sts. Place a locking M on the RS of the fabric. When knitting the center stitch, move the CO tail over the working yarn before you knit the center stitch. This will make closing the flower at the end easier.

Row 2 WS: K5 (7, 8), w&t.

Repeat Rows 1 & 2 an additional 1 (3, 4) times. Total of 8 (12, 15) sts.

Work Row 1 once more to get 9 (13, 16) total sts.

Row A WS: BO 3 (5, 6) sts, k to end. Total sts 6 (8, 10) sts. Turn.

Row B RS: K6 (8, 10).

Row C WS: K6 (8, 10).

You have finished one petal. Continue knitting petals until you have completed 9, or until your scrubby can lie flat when the CO edge is lined up with the working edge.

Proceed to BO instructions.

Bind-off

Using the basic bind-off method, BO all stitches. Cut a tail that measures 12 inches/30.5 cm long.

Finishing

First, close the center of your flower and weave in the CO tail.

Using Mattress Stitch with your BO tail, seam the first and last petal together.

Cut a tail. Weave in ends. Block as desired.
