Mosaic Scrubby: A Free Knit Scrubby Pattern Introduction

Like tiles or windows, the Mosaic Scrubby is a visual delight for getting those kitchen or bathroom tiles clean!

The Mosaic Scrubby is knit using two colors and worked flat from the bottom up utilizing mosaic knitting style. We will only be working with one yarn at a time, making this a breeze to knit. Whether you’re knitting for personal use or to sell, this pattern is beautiful.

If using this pattern for sales, then please credit me as the designer.

Happy knitting!

Skills

This project is suited for knitters who are comfortable working in or who are open to learning the following skills and techniques:

Bind-off, cast-on, mosaic knitting, slipping sts purlwise, wrap & turn (w&t)

Not familiar with these techniques? No problem! The pattern includes links to helpful tutorial videos to guide you every step of the way.

Mosaic Scrubby: A Free Knit Scrubby Pattern Notes

  • One color will be worked at a time.
  • All slipped sts should be slipped purlwise.
  • When slipping sts, the carried yarn must be on the wrong side of the fabric and instructions will direct you to hold the yarn in front or back (wyif/wyib). Do not confuse the front and back of work with the wrong side/right side of fabric. The non-working yarn will always be carried along the wrong side of the fabric.
  • CC yarn will be worked on the center sts only.
  • If you are not using a yarn similar to the recommended yarn, you may wish to pick up the wraps and knit together with the stitch so as to eliminate any visible lines.

Techniques Used

Attaching the CC yarn

When working Row 5 for the first time, you will attach the CC yarn by following these steps.

  1. Start with the CC yarn on the back of the work (WS of fabric).
  2. Slip 2 stitches.
  3. Bring the CC working yarn forward to the front of the work (RS of fabric). Leave the tail end of the CC yarn in the back of the work (WS of fabric).
  4. Slip 1 stitch.
  5. Bring the CC working yarn back to the back of the work (WS of fabric). You are now ready to begin working a k2 with CC.

By wrapping this stitch you are attaching the CC yarn to your knitting. You can choose to weave in the CC tail end as you knit, or weave it in later when you have finished knitting.

Carrying up CC yarn

To carry the non-working yarn as you knit, you will create small vertical floats. Follow these steps on Rows 3, 7, and 11.

  1. Work the first 2 sts in MC.
  2. Bring the non-working yarn over the working yarn.
  3. Knit the stitch as usual.

Continue knitting the row.

Wrap and turn

You may view Yarn and Chocolate’s Tutorial here.

  1. Knit the number of sts as indicated by the pattern.
  2. Slip 1 st purlwise.
  3. Bring the working yarn forward.
  4. Slip 1 st purlwise back to the LH needle. (Do not twist the st – whichever way you slipped it, slip it back the same direction.)
  5. Turn. Your working yarn is now in the back.

Continue knitting as directed.
