Muff Knitting Pattern for Free – Warm Hearts Warm Hands
The Warm Hearts Warm Hands Muff knitting pattern has been available for some time. It was a labor of love and a KAL. But recently, I wanted to release something for free, and didn’t have a lot of time to come up with a new pattern. And so, I’m excited to present this muff knitting pattern to you for free!
It’s a bit of a challenge with double knitting and chart following, but if you feel up to the challenge – I’m sure you will enjoy knitting it up. There are of course tutorials to go with the skills.
One thing I want to mention, is that I use the flicking (throwing) method for knitting. My tutorials are around using this knitting method, and I understand that if you knit with say the Norwegian style, then the movement of yarns for double knitting is quite different. As such, please do not be discouraged, but you may have to figure that bit out on your own.
This pattern is available for free, but if you prefer a downloadable version, you may purchase one on Ravelry, Etsy or Payhip.

Warm Hearts Warm Hands Muff Knitting Pattern For Free Introduction
The Warm Hands Warm Hearts muff pattern idea came to me in the middle of December 2022. My favorite gal and I were watching White Christmas. If you’re familiar with this musical, then you’ll know at the end, snow comes. The final number is being sung, the sisters are dressed splendently in gowns and fabulous muffs.
It got me thinking – where are all the muffs? These are awesome accessories. Seriously, add a little glam and have some warm hands – sign me up!
This pattern is designed with a provisional cast-on, double knit flat and then grafted together with Kitchener’s stitch. The heart takes the center on both the front and back of the muff. Thanks to double knitting, the muff is extra warm and reversible.
And while this yarn is bulky weight yarn, it’s also super lightweight. So the Warm Hearts Warm Hands Muff will be light as it keeps you warm.
Charts are used for this pattern, and you may find it useful to use Stitch Fiddle to keep track, unless you’d rather print. Up to you! I will make sure you can download the chart and remember to email me if you have any questions or difficulty lois@ozzylosiknitdesigns.com
You may knit items from this pattern for yourself, others, or to sell. If selling items made from this pattern, please credit me as the designer.

Kitchener Stitch
Check your tension as you are grafting so that your grafted edge matches the tension of your knitting.
Measure a length of yarn 3-4 times longer than the length of the edge you will graft in the DC. Place on a tapestry needle and follow the steps below.
With wrong sides facing and holding knitting needles parallel, keep the two edges you will not be grafting inside the tube you are working.
Set-up Stitches
The set-up only occurs on the first st of each needle. After you complete set-up, work the remaining sts in Kitchener Stitch.
Step 1 of Set-up Stitches
On the needle closest to you: insert your tapestry needle as if to p and pull your yarn through. Do not let the st drop off the needle.
Step 2 of Set-up Stitches
On the needle furthest from you: insert your tapestry needle as if to k and pull the yarn through. Do not let the st drop off the needle.
When the set-up sts are complete, follow these next 4 steps until all stitches are removed from your knitting needles. Be sure to check your tension through out this process. The gauge of your Kitchener Stitch should match the gauge of your knitting so as to make it invisible.

Warm Hearts Warm Hands Muff FREE Knitted Pattern Notes
A closed selvedge edge will be worked on the start and end of rows by following these instructions:
- Knit and purl through the back loop the last pair of sts of each row
- Slip the first pair of sts of each row purlwise, being sure to twist the yarn you are not using behind the yarn you will use to knit the first stitch.
This pattern is double knit flat. When you have completed the full chart, you will graft together the inside and outside of the muff using Kitchener Stitch.

Cast-on
To view a YouTube tutorial on how to do the Provisional Cast-on, click here.
For this pattern, we are going to do a provisional cast-on of each side of our double knitting. This will allow us to graft both sides together at the end. Use two different colors waste yarn to help differentiate between the two sides of double knitting.
Using Provisional Cast-on Method, and waste yarn,
CO 41 sts on one needle.
CO 41 sts on a second needle.
Combine these two cast-ons by alternating sts on one needle. To view a YouTube tutorial about this step, click here.
Set-up Row
To view a YouTube tutorial on how to do the set-up row, click here.
Once you have both sets of provisional co sts on one needle you will need to knit 1 set up row. This row is worked to establish one color for each side of the muff.
To ensure double knitting works correctly, you need to move both yarns to the front when purling, and both yarns to the back when knitting.
Once your first row is complete, begin working from the chart on the next page. The heart design will appear on both sides of the knit item in the contrasting color.
When you have completed the 56 rows, proceed to finishing instructions.
Chart Notes
The chart shows 41 sts, but the actual fabric has 82 sts. Each square of the chart represents two sts. One is a knit st in the color shown, the other is a purl st in the opposite color for the back of the work.
After each knit st, you will bring both yarns to the front and purl with the opposite color from the previous chart square. The squares represent the knit side of the fabric only.
You may also choose to track your chart electronically through Stitch Fiddle. This is at no cost to you, simply click the icon to the right.
For all even numbered rows, you will be working the chart in reverse. All knit sts will be made with the opposite color of the chart, and purl sts made with the colors shown from the chart.

Finishing
Prepping for Grafting
Each side of the double knitting will need to be grafted together separately to create a reversible tube.
When you have completed the chart instructions, you will need to prepare your stitches to be grafted together. Take two knitting needles either the same size or smaller than you have been knitting with. Transfer all the knit stitches to one needle and the purl stitches to the other needle.
When complete you should have 41 stitches on each needle with the purl sides facing each other and not visible.
Select which side you will graft together first. Take another knitting needle in the size required for knitting or smaller and transfer one set of stitches from the waste yarn on to the knitting needle.
Using the same color yarn as the set-up row, follow instructions for Kitchener Stitch.
Cut a tail. Weave in ends. Block as desired.
Wait, that’s it? Yep! It’s super simple! Perfect for beginner knitters who want to learn knitting-in-the-round. Also perfect for anyone wanting to make a last minute quick knit gift.
Thanks!
