Comfy Cozy Beanie Knit Pattern Free Introduction

Who doesn’t love a super soft beanie? Light as air and soft as a cloud, this bulky weight beanie will keep you warm and comfy-cozy.

Knit in the round using the most classic stitches – stockinette and 2×2 ribbing. With a simple crown using center double decreases, you will find this bulky knit beanie finishes in no time!

You may knit items from this pattern for yourself, others, or to sell. If selling items made from this pattern, then please credit me as the designer.

And if I can just get a little more personal, I’d love to share with you how and why I designed this beanie. Or you can just skip the mushy stuff – up to you!

Knitting for loved ones

You may not know, but I have a step daughter, Ashlyn. I love her very much. She’s in her college era and living her best life in Southern California.

When she was 13, life was hard. You can imagine being a middle school girl, but added to that there was major life thing happening that I do not feel at liberty to discuss here. But, that is when she began struggling with stress induced Alopecia.

Can you imagine? Being 13, a middle school girl going completely bald? What a nightmare! Thankfully she can rock a bald head, and of course we got her some wigs.

Anyway, unfortunately the stress induced Alopecia has struck again. And once again bald headed, our beautiful daughter asked for a hand knit beanie. Which of course I was thrilled to make for her. So, I knit hat after hat after hat. None of them were good enough.

I don’t know why, or if you do this too, but when I want to knit for someone I love and it’s like I want it to be super special – I stress myself out. Nothing I knit is good enough.

So I ended up shopping for yarn – because what better way to make a perfect knit than to start with perfect yarn?

Agonizing over the color and texture of the yarn I ended up seeing the Lion Brand Feels Like Bliss. #affiliatelink. And while I love yarn that gives good stitch definition, and this yarn definitely doesn’t do that, I couldn’t resist it’s super soft texture! I ended up getting it. Then knowing my step daughter, I design a hat that is classic in style, and a little slouchy (the way she will wear it anyway).

And there you have it – the Comfy Cozy Beanie was born. And then I knit the matching cowl. Followed by some arm warmers.

Long story short (too late!), this beanie is great for someone who has a sensitive head, and if you use the Lion Brand Feels Like Bliss yarn it will also not be irritating to their skin – bonus points!

Materials recommended and needed for your Comfy Cozy Cowl

Yarn recommendations

Lion Brand Yarns, Feels Like Bliss, fiber content: nylon 100%; 109 yards/100 meters; 3.5 oz/100 g, or similar yarn that knits to gauge.

Sample used 94 (120, 141) yards/86 (110, 129) meters; 3 (3.75, 4.5) oz/86 (110, 129) g; 1 (2, 2) ball(s). The sample size made was Teen using 2 balls in the Dusk colorway.

I highly, highly recommend this yarn. And not just because I am affiliated, because I enjoyed knitting with it and so did all of the test knitters who opted to use the recommended yarn. I doubt very much you will be disappointed.

But of course, you can choose whatever bulky weight yarn you like or have on hand – for some inspiration, please scroll to the bottom of this post to see what the test knitters used and what they had to say about yarn options.

Knitting needles

US size 9/5.5 mm and US size 11/8 mm, or size used to match gauge – circular for magic loop or 16” and/or DPNs as you prefer.

Notions

Beginning of round marker, six additional stitch markers, scissors, and a tapestry needle.

Gauge you need to knit your Comfy Cozy Cowl

14 sts x 18 rounds over 4″/10 cm in stockinette stitch in the round.

While it’s good to get gauge, I would say it’s not really necessary for this pattern. Test knitters did not do swatches prior to test knitting this pattern. They found that they either got on the nose, or very close to matching gauge. You can always cast-on and see how your gauge is once you have on a some rounds. Of course, not matching gauge could mean that your beanie won’t fit – so proceed with caution!

You can watch a video tutorial on my YouTube channel here.

Knit front and back (kfb)

  2. Pull the yarn through the st, but do not drop the st from the left needle.
  3. Insert your right needle into the same st on your left needle from right to left along the back leg of the st on the left needle.
  4. Pull the yarn through the st and drop the st from the left needle.
